For the most famous grape variety of the Iberian Peninsula, the magnificent Tempranillo, the best possible glass has been developed.
Riedel has dedicated not one, but two glasses to Tempranillo. After intensive tasting procedures between 1997 and 1998, it became clear that the Tempranillo grape variety posed high challenges to the glass manufacturer.
The younger, fruity, light wines are less full-bodied. In contrast, the tannin-rich and barrel-aged varieties, like the great ones among the Gran Reservas from Ribera or Rioja, present themselves differently. Spanish wine tasters, such as Pablo Alvares (Vega Sicilia), Alejandro Fernández (Pesquera), and Carlos Falcó, Marqués de Griñón, were impressed by the interplay between wine and glass shape. For the Grand Reservas, a large glass was desired, in which the flavor notes and bouquet of the oak-aged top wines are harmoniously displayed.
For the young, fruity, lighter Tempranillo, a small glass is the perfect solution.
In the final, decisive round, the tasters, including Michel Rolland, a top winemaker from Bordeaux, clearly opted for the double solution to enhance the taste of the different types.
Therefore, Riedel offers a glass for young, fruity, light Tempranillos, machine-blown in the Vinum series, and in the Sommeliers series, the ideal glass under the name Tinto Reserva for the great varieties from this grape.
