In search of the perfect Sauvignon Blanc glass, Riedel embarked on an odyssey around the globe, involving hundreds of wine tasters, which turned out to be the most elaborate search for the optimal glass shape to date.
In December 1997, a Sauvignon Blanc workshop was held at the Carmel winery, demonstrating the effects of the wine glass on the wine.
It turned out that the existing Sauvignon Blanc glass from the Vinum series did indeed bring out the variety of the grape, but did not perform better than the white wine glass from the Ouverture series. These results prompted Riedel to conduct tastings in Australia and New Zealand, where similar results were achieved, and where the same three glass shapes won each time.
Riedel then developed prototypes that combined the shapes of the winning trio. To their great satisfaction, the newly developed shapes proved themselves in workshops held in Bordeaux and Austria, performing significantly better than the existing trio.
The new glass from Riedel is suitable for all Sauvignon Blanc wines: from the fresh Loire wines with their high mineral content to the barrel-aged wines from Bordeaux. The tall, slender glass ensures the intense aroma typical of the variety. The taste is characterized by the balance of fruit and acidity with a fine mineral finish.
