Spiegelau, in collaboration with the leading IPA brewers in the United States, Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head and Ken Grossman from Sierra Nevada, is setting a new standard for IPA (Indian Pale Ale) beer glasses. A variety of possible designs for this beer style were tested in a series of design and tasting workshops.
At a final tasting of 8 prototypes in early February in New York, the selection unanimously fell on the glass "Number 6", the IPA glass by Spiegelau. Its elongated shape with a well-formed opening supports the hop bitterness of IPAs. Its thin walls keep the freshness and coolness in the glass without giving it away. The hollow ribbed stem aerates the beer when poured, thus enhancing the development of aromas and therefore the taste. Furthermore, the ribs help maintain the foam due to the refreshing effect.
The mouth rim diameter directs the beer directly to the center of the palate, thereby slightly emphasizing the sweetness. The top of the glass is shaped in such a way that with each sip, it's like "a fireworks of aromas in the nose," as Sam Calagione puts it. This latest design in the Spiegelau beer glass collection is THE glass to enjoy IPA beer.
