HORL 3 Roller Sharpener - The Original
Sharpen knives easily and professionally with the HORL 3 rolling sharpener. Following the HORL 1 prototype and its evolution to the HORL 2, the next generation of rolling sharpeners is launching in fall 2024: the HORL 3 rolling sharpener features a stylish design and impresses with technical innovations.
Every knife, no matter the high-quality, eventually loses its sharpness with use and needs to be resharpened. With the HORL 3 rolling sharpener, no prior knowledge of knife sharpening is necessary—in contrast to traditional sharpening with a whetstone, which requires proper technique and some practice for good results. Using the HORL 3 knife sharpener is simple, gentle, and very effective.
The HORL 3 knife sharpener consists of two parts: the rolling sharpener itself and the magnetic sharpening guide. The sharpening guide secures the knife at the ideal angle to the rolling sharpener using extra-strong neodymium magnets. This allows the sharpener to be guided precisely and effortlessly along the knife edge. This is a crucial factor, as maintaining the correct and consistent sharpening angle is essential for successful knife sharpening.
The rolling sharpener tool has two sides: a diamond side and, depending on the model, a stainless steel or ceramic side. Sharpening with the fine-grit diamond disc gives the knife a smooth and sharp edge. Then, honing with the stainless steel or ceramic disc smooths the blade further and removes any burr. For a perfect finish after sharpening, we recommend the original HORL leather strop made from genuine Cowhide leather.
The HORL 3 roller sander is available in different versions, from the basic model to the professional tool. The HORL product family also includes stylish docking stations for presenting and storing the HORL roller sander, a storage box, various interchangeable sanding discs, a magnifying glass - the HORL Magnifier - for checking the sharpness and the resharpenable HORL scissors.
HORL Scissors
The Freiburg-based company has developed a pair of scissors to match the HORL 3 roll sharpener that can be easily resharpened using the HORL roll sharpener The HORL scissors are pre-sharpened with a reproducible cross cut and have an extremely high sharpness.
Thanks to the spring-loaded quick-release fastener, the HORL scissors can be separated into two scissor halves in just one movement for subsequent resharpening. When closed, this spring-loaded quick-release fastener ensures dynamic pre-tensioning of the scissor blades and makes the HORL scissors a precision tool for exact cutting work.
To ensure the optimum grinding angle of 45° during the grinding process, the contact surfaces of the HORL scissors have been designed so that they are positioned at the correct angle during resharpening. The creative innovative thinking of the HORL brand is also evident in these details.
How to use the HORL 3 roller sander
To sharpen the knife, start by choosing a flat working surface: a countertop, a large cutting board, or a table. Then, place the knife with the spine down on the surface and use the strong magnets to position the sharpening guide approximately in the middle of the blade.
Hold the sharpening guide firmly with one hand, and position the rolling sharpener parallel to the blade with the other hand. Now, move the rolling sharpener along the blade using the diamond grinding side, applying light pressure in a rolling motion, back and forth. It’s important to sharpen the entire blade, all the way to the tip. (The number of times this sharpening motion should be performed depends on how dull the knife was initially.) Then, flip the knife over and repeat the sharpening process on the other side.
When the knife is fully sharpened, use the honing disc of the rolling sharpener. This step smooths the edge and removes the burr created during sharpening. The process is identical to the sharpening procedure. For a professional finish that removes any remaining sharpening residue and polishes the knife edge, use the original HORL leather strop made from genuine cowhide.
