The development of sherry glass is quite the opposite of that of port glass. Traditionally, the Port Wine Institute promotes a small, spherical glass (äresembling the Sommeliers Beaujolais Nouveau),which was given to the Riedel judges in the last place. It was tasted in glasses used by the Port Wine Institute's oenologists against the glasses that Riedel offered for selection. This resulted in a quick, general agreement on the choice of the Tawny glass. At the Vintage Port tasting that followed, the just cooled Tawny glass proved to be unsuitable,to the surprise of the tasters. Months later,at a second tasting,Riedel succeeded in defining the shape of the glass that would reflect the Vintage Port and its character.
