In search of the perfect Sauvignon Blanc glass,Riedel has embarked on an odyssey around the globe in which hundreds of wine tasters have participated and which has turned out to be the most elaborate search to date for the optimal chalice shape.
In December 1997,a Sauvignon Blanc workshop was held at the Carmel Winery to demonstrate the effects of the wine glass on the wine.
This workshop showed that the existing Sauvignon Blanc glass of the Vinum series did indeed bring the variety of grapes to bear, but did not perform better than the white wine glass of the Ouverture series. The results prompted Riedel to organise tastings in Australia and New Zealand, where the results were similar and where the same three calyx shapes won each time.
Riedel then developed prototypes combining the shapes of the winning trio. To his great satisfaction, the newly developed forms proved themselves and performed much better than the existing trio at workshops held in Bordeaux and in the Austrian region.
The new glass from Riedel is suitable for all Sauvignon Blanc wines: from the fresh Loire wines with their high mineral content to the barrique matured wines from Bordeaux. The tall, slender glass provides the intense scent typical of the variety. The taste is characterized by the balance of fruit and puree with a fine mineral finish.
