Especially young red wines need contact with atmospheric oxygen to develop their optimal bouquet. It is therefore customary to open these wines a few hours before consumption and leave them in the decanter carafe. After inserting a normal 0.75 l wine bottle,the carafe is just half full. Here the contact surface between wine and atmospheric oxygen is maximum,i.e. the best prerequisite for the development of the bouquet.
