Hard-paste porcelain is recognizable thanks to extraordinary surface toughness of the enamel and a special tightness of the material.
This is possible due to a high kaolin proportion (50%) and a feldspar enamel, which starts to melt only at the temperature range from 1350 to 1450 °C. At this temperature the porcelain shards may start to sinter as well.
Because of high firing temperature the possible colour palette of hard-paste porcelain is much more limited than by soft porcelain. In order to use the hard porcelain in a dishwasher, it must have in-glaze decoration.
