By adding brandy the alcoholic fermentation of the mash is stopped. That creates a wine with a rest-sugar content and 18 - 20 % Alcohol.
Right the opposite of the development of the sherry glass is the development of the port-wine glass. Traditionally the Port-wine institute recommends a small, ball-shaped glass (similar to the one of the Sommeliers Beaujolais Nouveau) which was given the last place by the Riedel judges.
The tasting was made with the glasses which oenologists of port-wine wineries use in competition with glasses which were given by Riedel. The result was a soon common agreement on the Tawny-glass.
The following Vintage Port tasting showed that the just winning Tawny-glass was surprisingly totally inadequate. Months later, when having another tasting, Riedel succeeded to define a glass-design which fit's the character of the Vintage Port.
